All things cute
It is really hard for me to hold back. I sometimes just buy things because I think they are cute. I do it on a whim, and usually without an intended purpose for them. They eventually just take up space in my cupboards, which I have very few of, & just sit there, looking to good to open or use.
This weekend I stopped by Pearl River Mart with my friend Nick, who graciously entertained Luke while I stuffed my basket full of cute treats and snacks. How could I resist the cutest snack food ever? Well clearly I couldn't, and they are just sitting around waiting for a special occasion, which will probably never come, where I might justify breaking them open.
Which brings me to another key point of discussion. Why can't we make cute stuff like this? How does Japan have this market cornered? they so have it right, you would think someone here would catch on.
Starting with fabric. I try to resist, but come on, its just so cute. My last order from Superbuzzy is still waiting for me to make something with, which I probably never will. But that's ok, I really prefer just staring at it.
And knick knacks. Cram Creme has my favorite selections of non-needed kitschy fun.
And my favorite, Hello Kitty. I had to throw her in.

i ate so many of those little boxes of pretzely-chocolate covered mushrooms when i was in san francisco. they aren't that great but SO cute, i couldn't help but want them all the time. there were other treats i coudn't do without just because of the incredible packaging- cute on the outside AND inside of the box. it's crazy and so fun. one of the packages was brought home for you (hello kitty of course) but the girls got to it before we made it to your place. sorry.
i spent a lot of years wishing i were asian, and secretly, i still do. their stuff is just cooler than ours.
pearl river mart. what a fun store. i miss it.
i like your fabric from superbuzzy too.
We do catch on, we are just like 10 years behind. And even then it's like a slightly less cuter hipper version. I love that you said "non needed" stuff. That cracks me up. I guess in all of these things are non needed but that doesn't stop you from wanting them. Kind of like me and my friend Paul Frank. Although what are those roles of stuff next to the mushroom top man? Tape? Gum? Curious minds, or just me, want to know.
ridiculously cute rolls of tape.
america's idea of cute is a mixture of so many different cultures. in japan, it's just one. that's why they do so well at it.
when i went to japan this past spring, i went to a parade/festival. where we have funnel cakes and hot dogs, they had dried squid and these ridiculously delicious bags of mini pound cakes made into famous japanese cartoon characters. there was pokemon, hello kitty, and one only known in japan - anpan man. i got the hello kitty ones, and i was in heaven. apparently, you can buy the little pans to make these cute little cakes, but i never found them when i was there.
i am just as guilty of buying non-needed things, especially when it comes to asian goods. there's just nothing like it, i must admit.
